Quick answer: Incheon Airport's SmartPass lets Korean and foreign passengers aged 7 and over pass the departure entrance and boarding gate by face scan after registering their passport in an app or at a kiosk. Dedicated entrances are expanding through 2026. Explera DMC Korea briefs tour leaders on who can use it.
What is SmartPass?
- Face scan instead of documents. Registered passengers pass the departure hall entrance and the boarding gate by facial recognition at Incheon International Airport.
- Who can use it. Korean and foreign passengers aged 7 and over. Children under 14 need a guardian's consent.
- How to register. In the SmartPass app or at a self check-in kiosk: scan the passport and its chip, scan the face, then register the boarding pass.
- How long it lasts. The face data stays valid for five years, but the boarding pass is registered for each departure, and a new passport means registering again.
What is expanding in 2026?
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is expanding the departure hall entrances reserved for SmartPass users from five to eight, in phases from 28 May to the end of 2026. More dedicated entrances mean a shorter line for registered passengers at busy times.
How should groups use it?
- It is optional. Clients who do not register use the normal lanes. Nobody in a group needs it to fly.
- Immigration is separate. SmartPass does not replace the immigration check, so passports and boarding passes stay in hand luggage, never in a checked bag.
- Tour leaders. A leader who registers can reach the gate early to meet the group, but should still walk the slower guests through the standard lanes.
- Departure-day timing. We keep the same airport arrival time for the whole group, since check-in and bag drop still take the time they take.
