Quick answer: In March 2026 Korea's Justice Ministry opened the Smart Entry Service gates at airport immigration to travellers from 42 countries and regions, up from 18. Adults generally qualify only once their fingerprints and photo were taken on an earlier entry, so first-time visitors still queue at staffed desks. Explera DMC Korea plans group arrivals around that split.
What is the Korea Smart Entry Service?
It is Korea's automated immigration lane. Instead of waiting for an officer, an eligible traveller scans a passport and a fingerprint at a gate and walks through. Korean citizens have used it for years; for foreign visitors it has been widening one list at a time.
In March 2026 the Ministry of Justice raised the number of eligible countries and regions from 18 to 42. The additions include the European Union member states that were not yet on the list, and Canada. The ministry has also added gates at Incheon and Jeju airports.
Who in your group can use the gates?
- Nationality comes first. The passport has to be on the Ministry of Justice list. A group of mixed nationalities will rarely clear in one lane.
- Then an earlier visit. Visitors aged 17 and over can use the gates once their fingerprints and photo were registered on a previous entry. A first-time adult visitor goes to a staffed desk, whatever the passport.
- Children are different. Under-17s need pre-registration or a legal representative, depending on their age.
- Some travellers never qualify. The gates are not available where fingerprints cannot be verified, or where entry or exit is restricted under the Immigration Act.
How we plan a split arrival
- We mark it on the rooming list. When passports come in, we flag each traveller as gate or desk, so nobody learns it in the queue.
- The meeting point is after baggage claim. Repeat visitors on the gates come out well ahead of first-timers at the desks. The guide waits for the whole group at one spot, not at the immigration exit.
- Coach timing follows the slower lane. We time the pick-up to the staffed desks on a busy arrival bank, not to the fastest traveller.
- The tour leader knows the rules. We brief the leader before departure, so first-timers are not sent to a gate that will turn them back.

Frequently asked questions
Which countries can use Korea's Smart Entry Service?
Since the March 2026 expansion, travellers from 42 countries and regions are eligible, including the EU member states and Canada. We check every passport in a group against the Ministry of Justice list.
Can a first-time visitor to Korea use the e-gates?
Usually not. Visitors aged 17 and over qualify once their fingerprints and photo were registered on an earlier entry, so first-time adults clear at a staffed desk.
Can children in a group use the Smart Entry gates?
Travellers under 17 need pre-registration or a legal representative, depending on their age. Families should expect to use a staffed desk unless this is arranged.
Does the Smart Entry Service replace K-ETA or the arrival card?
No. It is a faster way through passport control, not a permission to enter. Entry requirements such as K-ETA still apply to the nationalities that need them.
