Quick answer: Every winter, red-crowned and white-naped cranes gather on the rice plain of Cheorwon in Gangwon, close to the DMZ. The season runs roughly from late autumn to early spring, with the most reliable weeks in mid-winter, but numbers vary each year and no sighting can be guaranteed. Much of the plain lies near the Civilian Control Line, so visits run through organised programmes with passport checks and photography limits. Temperatures are well below freezing. Explera DMC Korea plans the access, a birding guide, cold-weather logistics and a pairing with Cheorwon's DMZ sites.
What groups come to see
- Red-crowned and white-naped cranes, both threatened species, which winter on the harvested rice fields of the Cheorwon plain.
- Flocks feeding and flying, best in the early morning and late afternoon.
- Other winter birds, including raptors and waterfowl, which serious birders will also want time for.
- The setting itself: a frontier landscape a few kilometres from the DMZ, which gives the day its second story.
When to go
- Roughly late autumn to early spring. The cranes arrive in the autumn and leave as the weather warms; mid-winter is usually the most reliable period.
- Numbers change every year. Weather, food and water decide where the birds feed on a given day.
- Never promise a sighting. Sell the day as a guided crane-watching programme, and let the local guide report conditions the week before.
Access and rules
- Much of the plain is near the Civilian Control Line. Visits run through organised programmes at set times, with passport checks at the entry points.
- Photography is restricted near military installations; the guide says where cameras stay down. No drones.
- Keep a distance from the birds. Groups watch from the vehicle or from set viewpoints and do not walk into the fields.
- Send passport details early, exactly as the programme asks for them.
Running the day
- It is a long day from Seoul. An overnight in the area makes a dawn start realistic and the day less tiring.
- Dress for serious cold. Thermal layers, gloves, hats and hand warmers; standing still at a viewpoint is colder than walking.
- Optics make the day. Provide binoculars and a spotting scope, or tell clients to bring their own.
- Plan toilets and a hot lunch; facilities in the restricted area are limited.
- Pair it with Cheorwon's DMZ sites — an observatory and the ruins of the old Workers' Party building — or with a winter festival on the way back.
Planned for the cold
Explera DMC Korea arranges access through the organised programmes, a guide who knows the birds, suitable vehicles and a warm lunch stop, and builds the day around conditions reported that week. For southern programmes, the hooded cranes of Suncheon Bay are the winter alternative.
