Where to Base a Group in Seoul: Choosing the Area

29 September 2026 · Explera Trade Desk · 6 min read

Quick answer: The right Seoul base depends on where the group's days start. Myeongdong and the City Hall area are central for shopping and first-time groups; Jongno and Gwanghwamun put the palaces within walking distance; Gangnam and COEX suit MICE and newer hotels but are a longer, traffic-dependent run to the palace district; Yeouido suits corporate groups; Hongdae is lively and on the airport railroad; Seoul Station and Yongsan suit rail days. Check where the coach can stop at each hotel. Explera DMC Korea matches the base to the programme and handles the coach plan.

Start from the programme, not the hotel

  • Where do most days start? A heritage programme and a conference programme want different bases.
  • How does the group arrive and leave? The airport route and a rail day at either end both affect the choice.
  • What happens in the evenings? Free evenings favour a lively, walkable area; early starts favour a quiet one.
  • What does the budget and the room block allow? Availability in the right area beats a better hotel in the wrong one.

The main areas

  • Myeongdong and City Hall: central, full of shopping and easy for first-time groups. The streets are narrow and busy, so coaches often use a set pick-up point rather than the hotel door.
  • Jongno and Gwanghwamun: the palaces, Insadong and Bukchon within walking reach. The natural base for a heritage-heavy programme.
  • Gangnam and COEX: MICE venues, newer hotels and K-culture shopping. The run to the palace district is longer and depends heavily on traffic.
  • Yeouido: the business district on the Han River. Good for corporate groups, and quieter at weekends.
  • Hongdae and Mapo: younger, lively and busy at night, and on the airport railroad line.
  • Seoul Station and Yongsan: the rail hubs. Useful the night before or after a KTX day.

Coach and transfer logistics

  • Ask where the coach stops. Some city hotels cannot take a large coach at the door, so the group walks to a nearby bay.
  • Allow for the river. Crossing between north and south Seoul at rush hour can double a journey.
  • Airport transfer times vary with traffic, and some areas are easier by the airport railroad than by road.
  • Plan the luggage. Check-in and check-out days need porterage and a clear loading point.

One base or two

  • One base is simpler for most leisure groups: one check-in, one pick-up point, one routine.
  • Two bases can make sense when the programme changes — Gangnam for conference days, then Jongno for a leisure extension.
  • Splitting one night across two hotels when the room block is short means two pick-ups and two check-ins; price that in before accepting it.

Matched to the programme

Explera DMC Korea proposes the base that fits the programme, checks coach access at each hotel, and plans transfers around Seoul's traffic rather than the map. Our Seoul hotels guide covers properties; our hotel contracts guide covers the room block.
