Quick answer: Korea recorded 15.05 million foreign arrivals from January to August 2026, up 21.6%, the culture ministry said on 28 September, and August alone brought 2.25 million. The total includes workers and residents, not only tourists. Explera DMC Korea reads it as a signal to confirm hotels, guides and coaches earlier.
The figures
- January to August 2026. 15.05 million foreign arrivals, up 21.6% from 12.38 million a year earlier.
- August. 2.25 million arrivals, up 23.3%. The ministry says both the monthly and cumulative figures are the highest in 30 years.
- Regional gateways. 27.8% of arrivals came through regional airports and seaports.
- Spending. Foreign card spending on tourism reached KRW 14.018 trillion, up 48.5%.
What the number counts
- All foreign entries. The total includes workers and residents as well as tourists, so it is not a count of leisure visitors or tour groups.
- A national total. It says nothing about a particular city or week. A quiet week can sit inside a record year.
- October. The ministry expects October, with its Travel Month campaign, to be the busiest month for international arrivals.
What it means for group space
- Earlier confirmation. In a busier year, hotel blocks in Seoul and Busan for peak weeks are worth confirming earlier than before.
- Guides and coaches too. We confirm guides in the group's language and coaches at the same time as the rooms, not after.
- Regional gateways are in use. More than a quarter of arrivals already enter outside the Seoul area, which makes a regional arrival a practical option.
How we plan around it
We read the record as a timing signal, not a reason to change the programme. Our peak inbound weeks briefing lists the weeks to check first, and our regional airports briefing covers choosing a gateway.
For fourth-quarter and early 2027 departures, we hold rooms and guides as soon as dates are firm, and we say clearly which parts are confirmed and which are on request.
