Quick answer: Since 17 March 2026, visitors can buy Seoul subway passes and single tickets with overseas Visa or Mastercard cards at 440 machines in 273 stations on Lines 1 to 8. Tapping a foreign card at the gate still does not work. Explera DMC Korea briefs every group on getting around during free time.
What changed in March 2026?
- Overseas cards at the machine. 440 new machines at 273 stations on Seoul subway Lines 1 to 8 accept internationally issued Visa and Mastercard cards, as well as Kakao Pay and Naver Pay.
- What clients can buy. Short-term Climate Card passes for unlimited travel, and single-journey subway tickets. The single tickets work on the subway only.
- The fee. Seoul says an average service fee of about 3.7% applies to purchases and top-ups with an overseas card.
What still does not work?
- Tapping a foreign card at the gate. Fare gates and bus readers still need a Korean transit card. Seoul plans card payment at regular readers from 2027.
- Buses. Tmoney plans overseas-card payment on Seoul city buses in 2027, then on Incheon and airport buses. Until then, clients use a pass or a T-money card on the bus.
- Older machines. Only the new machines take overseas cards, so clients should look for them rather than use any machine in the station.
What should go in the client briefing?
- Free time in Seoul. A short-term Climate Card bought on the first morning covers most free-time trips on the subway and Seoul city buses.
- Outside Seoul. For trips beyond Seoul's network, or on airport buses, a T-money card remains the simple answer.
- The guide's first stop. Our guides show the group the right machine on day one, so nobody spends free time queuing at the wrong one.
