Quick answer: Free time is part of a good Korea programme, not a gap in it. Most groups want at least one free afternoon or evening in Seoul, and often one in Busan or Jeju, for shopping, cafés or their own sightseeing. Seoul makes that easy: public transport is clear and safe, and central districts are walkable. The key is where the group is left and how it gets back — a known meeting point, a time, and a hotel card. Optional tours fill free time for guests who want structure; they work best when offered before departure, with a clear minimum and a guide assigned. Explera DMC Korea plans both.
How much free time to build in
- At least one free afternoon or evening in Seoul. Guests want time for shopping, cafés and their own discoveries, and a programme with none feels rushed.
- One more in a second city. Busan or Jeju, where the beach or a market is close to the hotel.
- Not on arrival day. Free time works best in the middle of the trip, once guests know the city and the transport.
- Matched to the group. Incentive and first-time groups usually want less; repeat visitors and study groups often want more.
Where to leave a group, and how it gets back
- Leave them somewhere central. Myeongdong, Insadong, the palace area or Gangnam, close to shops, food and the subway.
- Give a meeting point and a time, or tell them to return to the hotel on their own, and say which in writing.
- A hotel card for every guest. The hotel's name and address in Korean, to show a taxi driver.
- Transport. Seoul's subway is clear and signed in English; a transport card and a short briefing from the guide make it easy.
Optional tours
- Offer them before departure. Guests decide better at home, and the DMC can plan guides and vehicles.
- A clear minimum. Each optional runs only above a stated number of guests, with a cut-off date.
- Good choices. An evening viewpoint, a performance, a food walk, the DMZ or a half day at a palace in hanbok.
- Run properly. A licensed guide, a proper vehicle and the same standard as the main programme.
Why it matters
Free time is where guests make the trip their own, and it often gives the best stories. It also rests the group and the guide, so the next full day goes better.
Optional tours let one programme serve different guests: those who want structure and those who want freedom. Priced and run well, they add value for the guest and for the agent.
