Seoul's Local Neighbourhoods for Groups: Beyond the Palaces

9 October 2026 · Explera Trade Desk · 5 min read

Quick answer: Beyond the palaces and shopping streets, Seoul's neighbourhoods show how the city lives now. Seongsu-dong turned former factories and workshops into cafés, design shops and pop-up stores; Euljiro keeps its printing and tool shops beside small bars; Ikseon-dong has hanok alleys full of cafés and restaurants; Yeonnam-dong runs along a park built on an old railway line; and Seochon, west of Gyeongbokgung, mixes hanok with local eateries. These areas suit repeat and younger groups, walked in small guided groups. Explera DMC Korea plans the routes with the agent.

The neighbourhoods

  • Seongsu-dong. Former shoe workshops and warehouses turned into cafés, design shops and brand pop-ups.
  • Euljiro. Printing and tool shops in old alleys, with small bars and restaurants opening in former workshops.
  • Ikseon-dong. Narrow hanok alleys converted into cafés, bakeries and restaurants.
  • Yeonnam-dong. The Gyeongui Line Forest Park, a linear park on an old railway, with Mangwon Market nearby.
  • Seochon. Hanok houses, galleries and local eateries west of Gyeongbokgung Palace.

Group logistics

  • Small groups. Alleys are narrow; we split larger groups into units of 10 to 15, each with a guide.
  • No coach parking. Coaches drop at a main road; the rest is on foot or by subway.
  • Pop-ups change. Shops and pop-up stores turn over quickly, so we confirm the route close to the date.
  • Weekends. Seongsu and Ikseon-dong are crowded at weekends; weekdays work better.

Respecting residents

Several of these areas are residential. In Bukchon's busiest lane, tourists may enter only between 10:00 and 17:00 since late 2024, and guides brief groups to keep their voices down and not photograph private homes. We apply the same care in every neighbourhood.

Why it works

Repeat visitors and younger travellers want the Seoul that Koreans spend their weekends in. A half-day neighbourhood walk adds that without changing the rest of the programme.

It also pairs well with a free afternoon, because guests learn where to come back to on their own.
