Baekje Heritage Tours for Groups: Gongju, Buyeo and Iksan

27 September 2026 · Explera Trade Desk · 7 min read

Quick answer: The Baekje Historic Areas were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 8 July 2015. They are eight archaeological sites in Gongju, Buyeo and Iksan, the later capitals of the Baekje kingdom, dating from 475 to 660 CE: fortresses, royal tombs, temple sites, a palace site and a city wall. For a group that has already seen Gyeongju, Baekje is the other half of Korea's ancient story, and one UNESCO highlights for its exchanges with China and Japan. The sites are archaeological rather than rebuilt, so the guide and the order of the day matter more than at a palace in Seoul. Explera DMC Korea routes the three cities as a long day or, better, an overnight.

The eight sites, city by city

  • Gongju, the capital called Ungjin: Gongsanseong fortress and the royal tombs at Songsan-ri, which include the tomb of King Muryeong.
  • Buyeo, the capital called Sabi: Busosanseong fortress with the Gwanbuk-ri administrative buildings, the Jeongnimsa temple site, the royal tombs at Neungsan-ri and the Naseong city wall.
  • Iksan: the royal palace site at Wanggung-ri and the Mireuksa temple site.
  • One inscription. UNESCO lists all eight together as the Baekje Historic Areas, inscribed in 2015, and they date from 475 to 660 CE.

Why it sells: the other ancient kingdom

  • A second chapter after Gyeongju. Gyeongju tells the story of Silla. Baekje was another of the early kingdoms on the peninsula, and a repeat Korea client often has not heard of it.
  • A story of exchange. UNESCO describes the sites as evidence of technological, religious and artistic exchanges between the ancient kingdoms of Korea, China and Japan, which gives the day particular interest for clients from Japan and China.
  • Quiet by Korean standards. These are not the crowded palaces of Seoul, which suits a special-interest group, a study tour or clients who have done the classic circuit.

Routing: a long day or an overnight

  • Gongju and Buyeo sit close together in South Chungcheong and pair naturally in one day.
  • Iksan lies further south, on the KTX network and near Jeonju, so it fits best on the way to Jeonju's hanok village rather than squeezed into the same day.
  • From Seoul it is a long day. Covering Gongju and Buyeo and returning the same evening means many hours on the coach. An overnight in the region lets the group see the sites at a better pace.
  • Build it into a south-bound itinerary. Seoul, then Gongju and Buyeo, then Iksan and Jeonju, then onward, uses the road time instead of doubling it.

On the ground: archaeology needs a guide

  • Set expectations. Much of what survives is foundations, walls, burial mounds and stone pagodas, not rebuilt halls. Brief clients that this is archaeology before they arrive.
  • The guide makes the day. A guide who knows Baekje history turns a field of foundations into a capital. Ask for one with this specialism when you book.
  • Use the museums. Gongju and Buyeo both have national museums, and a museum visit early in the day gives the group the context for the sites that follow.
  • Walking and weather. The fortresses sit on hills, with paths and slopes. Plan the walking to the group and the season, and confirm opening days before the programme is final.

Planned on the ground

Explera DMC Korea plans Baekje heritage programmes for groups: the routing across Gongju, Buyeo and Iksan, the overnight where it helps, a guide who knows the history, museum visits ordered for context, and a 24/7 operations desk on Korean ground time throughout.

Send your dates, group size and interests to b2b@explera.kr or WhatsApp +66 93 656 8090. Explera DMC Korea is IATA TIDS-registered (96215733) and an ASTA member (#900408341); our KTO and KATA registrations are in application.
