Quick answer: World Youth Day comes to Seoul from 3 to 8 August 2027, announced by Pope Francis on 6 August 2023 at the closing Mass of World Youth Day in Lisbon, under the theme "Take courage! I have overcome the world" (John 16:33). For a travel agent, the event itself belongs to its organisers; what surrounds it is ground travel — arrival, hotels, transfers, and the days before and after. Korea also has a year-round draw for Catholic groups: the Seoul Catholic Pilgrimage Route, proclaimed by the Vatican in 2018 as Asia's first official international pilgrimage site. Explera DMC Korea plans the programme around the event and the pilgrimage days, and books early, because August in Seoul is already a busy month.
World Youth Day Seoul 2027: what is fixed so far
- The dates: 3 to 8 August 2027, in Seoul.
- The announcement: Pope Francis named Seoul on 6 August 2023, at the closing Mass of World Youth Day in Lisbon.
- The theme: "Take courage! I have overcome the world" (John 16:33).
- What is still to come: venues and the detailed programme are announced by the organisers. Build around their official announcements, not second-hand summaries, and expect the plan to firm up through 2027.
- Where a DMC fits: anything the organisers provide is theirs. The DMC handles what surrounds it — arrival and departure, hotels, coaches, a programme before or after the event, and the day the group needs to move across the city.
What August in Seoul means for a group
- Heat and rain. August is high summer in Korea, and it falls within the typhoon season. Plan water, shade and indoor alternatives into every day, and read our guide to typhoon and weather disruption before the programme is final.
- Hotels. A large international event concentrates demand in one city in one week. Hotel blocks for those dates are worth requesting early, on firm terms, and our guide to group hotel contracts sets out which clauses to agree.
- Youth groups. A young group needs leader ratios, consent and supervision planned before arrival; our guide to student and educational groups covers the operational side.
- Before and after. Many groups will want days outside the event — the pilgrimage route, a heritage day, or a quieter city — and those days are where the programme can be designed rather than fitted around a crowd.
The Seoul Catholic Pilgrimage Route
On 14 September 2018 the Vatican proclaimed the Seoul Catholic Pilgrimage Route as Asia's first official international pilgrimage site. It runs to 44.1 km in all, with three walking courses: Bukchon (about 3 km), Seosomun (4.5 km) and Hangang (4 km). Its sites include Myeongdong Cathedral, Jeoldusan Martyrs' Shrine, Yanghwajin Foreign Missionary Cemetery and Gahoe-dong Catholic Church.
- One course is a good half-day for a group, with time at each site rather than a march between them.
- These are places of worship. Check Mass times before scheduling a visit, brief the group on dress and on photography inside, and leave room for prayer rather than a timed stop.
- A guide who knows the history of Korea's Catholic community and its martyrs changes the day more than any other choice. Ask for one when you book.
Faith groups the rest of the year
- Parish and diocesan groups can build a programme around the pilgrimage route, with Mass arranged for the group where a church can accommodate it.
- Services in the group's language depend on the church and the language, so ask at booking rather than assume.
- Protestant and ecumenical groups follow the same planning: services, meetings with local congregations where these can be arranged, and heritage days around them.
- Korea's other religious traditions are part of the same country: a temple stay gives a group a night inside a Buddhist monastery's daily life.
Planned on the ground, around the event
Explera DMC Korea plans faith group programmes to Korea: hotel blocks for the World Youth Day week requested early and on firm terms; transfers and coaches planned around the event days; pilgrimage-route days with guides who know the history; Mass and service times confirmed before they go into the programme; and a 24/7 operations desk on Korean ground time through the event week and the days either side of it.
Send your dates, group size, age profile and the days you want outside the event to b2b@explera.kr or WhatsApp +66 93 656 8090. Explera DMC Korea is IATA TIDS-registered (96215733) and an ASTA member (#900408341); our KTO and KATA registrations are in application.
