Quick answer: Gwangju is the largest city in Korea's southwest, about two hours from Seoul by KTX, and Damyang is a short drive north of it. Together they make a strong day or overnight for groups: Gwangju carries the memory of the May 1980 democracy uprising, with its national cemetery and memorial sites, and a serious arts scene built around the Asia Culture Center and the Biennale, held every two years. Damyang is known for bamboo — the Juknokwon bamboo forest — for a road lined with tall metasequoia trees, and for Soswaewon, a Joseon-era scholar's garden. Explera DMC Korea pairs them with Jeonju or the south coast.
Gwangju: memory and art
- May 1980. The city is the centre of the democracy uprising of May 1980, and the national cemetery and memorial sites tell that story. A visit needs a guide who can explain it plainly and respectfully.
- The Asia Culture Center. A large arts complex in the city centre, built partly on the site of the uprising, with exhibitions and performances.
- The Biennale. Gwangju hosts one of Asia's longest-running contemporary art biennales, held every two years — a draw for art and design groups in the years it runs.
- Food. The southwest is known across Korea for generous tables with many side dishes, and Gwangju is a good place for a group lunch.
Damyang: bamboo and gardens
- Juknokwon. A bamboo forest with walking paths, cool and quiet even in summer, and easy walking for most groups.
- The metasequoia road. A long avenue lined with tall trees, especially striking in autumn colour.
- Soswaewon. A Joseon-era scholar's garden with pavilions, a stream and bamboo — small and calm, best for smaller groups or in sections.
- Bamboo in the kitchen. Local restaurants serve rice cooked in bamboo and bamboo-shoot dishes, which makes a natural group lunch.
Getting there and fitting it in
- By KTX. About two hours from Seoul to Gwangju, with the coach meeting the train; Damyang is a short drive further.
- As a day. A long day from Seoul is possible, but tiring. An overnight in Gwangju gives both places time.
- As part of a route. It sits well between Jeonju to the north and the south coast, so it fits a Seoul-to-Busan journey through the southwest.
Why it works
Most groups see Seoul, Busan, Jeju and Gyeongju. Gwangju and Damyang give a repeat visitor or a culture-focused group a different Korea: the recent history that shaped the country's democracy, a contemporary art scene, and a green, quiet countryside.
The two halves balance each other. A morning of memorial sites and serious conversation sits well beside an afternoon in the bamboo and a long lunch.
Planned as a route
Explera DMC Korea plans Gwangju and Damyang as part of a route — rail, coach, hotel and a guide who can speak about May 1980 with care — and checks the Biennale calendar for the year.
